This past Friday marked our third ever Grand Slam Finals where we not only crowned our first Grand Slam Champion since 2018, we formed 2021 Brave New Voices competition team to represent Fayetteville, North Carolina at this year’s festival.
It was a night full of tears, cheers, and snaps as eight finalists brought it all on the stage in two rounds of poetry to decide who would make it to the top six in the third round. Our final round was certainly a battle as a top six gave it their all to see who would be on our five-person team, who would be our alternate, and who would be crowned champion.
In the end, 17 year-old Zoe Hare, a student at Cumberland International Early College High School and Fayetteville native, was crowned our champion. She was then joined by Nylah Worley (16), Maddie Ross (17), Lilly Gore (16), and Tinaida “Spoken” Lopez (17) who all proved their worth to be part of our team. Closing out the final round was Kennedi Lyons Goode-bey (16) who will be our alternate and take the place of anyone on our team who can’t be a part of the competition.
Congratulations to all who made it to the finals, all six poets who will represent Fayetteville during the festival, and the top 5 who will compete in the slam this summer as Poetic Pathos Youth Slam represents Team Fayetteville at Brave New Voices for the third time.
